Sheffield – A city with a rich heritage

Although it may not seem it at times, Sheffield is a city with a rich heritage. There is nowhere else on the planet which can proclaim such unique heritage in subjects as diverse as being both the birthplace of stainless steel cutlery and the birthplace of football with the world’s oldest club and the world’s oldest ground still in use.

One of the best manifestations of the city’s heritage is to be found each January with the popular Heritage Fair held in the Millennium Galleries. Here heritage groups e.g. those styling themselves as “Friends of…”, suburban history groups, different museums etc from across the city showcase their organisations and share their success stories in preserving the city’s past.

Sheffield Visual Arts Group have taken part in this event in the past and will be taking part in 2025. The dates for 2025 have just been confirmed today (15th November) and we will be where we were in 2024. It’s such a great chance for all groups to attract new members, either adding new names to the distribution list for the newsletter or recruiting new blood. It’s an interesting exercise looking at how groups evolve with their ideas, as well as an opportunity to meet old friends. It acts as a coming together to share ideas (or borrow ideas). The 2024 event saw 45 stalls listed.

In a similar way, the opportunities presented by the Heritage Open Days present an opportunity to visit places not normally open to the public. In addition opportunities are created for city groups to explain their activities to the public by taking stalls in these spaces. Sheffield Visual Arts Group is one such group providing support to Channing Hall on Surrey Street by having a presence during that venue’s participation in the Heritage Open Days. This has two way benefits. It raises awareness of SVAG and also lets people appreciate the interior of the building (not to mention those delicious cakes and coffee).
